As a child I sucked on dried crusts of rye bread like a delicacy. As a student I still did. Dry bread, softening slowly in the mouth, was a treat.
Now the bread has become a calendar. Two strings of dried bread hang from the ceiling. The Lithuanian one is rye bread, 431 pieces, one for each month I lived in Lithuania. That string is finished. The Norwegian one is kneippbrød, the everyday Norwegian loaf. It gets one new piece every month.
In October 2026 the Norwegian string has 171 pieces. On the day of an exhibition it will have as many pieces as the months I have lived in Norway.
One string is closed. The other is still counting.
