Ius sanguinis / Ius domicili – A Story from No Man’s Land
This project emerges from my personal experience of losing my Lithuanian citizenship upon becoming a Norwegian citizen. It explores how laws and bureaucratic structures shape our sense of identity.
The two Latin terms form the conceptual framework of the work: Ius sanguinis – “the right of blood,” where citizenship is inherited through ancestry and parental nationality. Ius domicili – “the right of residence,” where citizenship is acquired through belonging to the place one lives.
These principles represent two distinct forms of belonging – the inherited and the lived – and serve as metaphors for my own situation between two nations.
